Sorry to be a killjoy about Irish dairy - recently a dairy farm in Limerick was found to have the corpses of over 400 bull calves on the farm😮😢. Even in the best run dairy farm, bull calves are a waste product and are destroyed. Female calves are taken away from their mother's too. All so we can take the milk. Dairy is scary. Go vegan for the animals 🎉🎉🎉

I am a brit with many connections and friends in Europe and need an EU passport for life and work. I am immigrating to ireland after brexit, to get an Eu passport. But after being in ireland for some years now, I realise how nice and helpful Irish people are and am very grateful, and now I will really become irish and support ireland. I am learning Gaelic to show how much I appreciate what ireland has done for me. I am 56 , but wonderful ireland has won me over. Given me a new life. Go raibh míle maith aga people of Ireland

9:23 = heart-break. "my husband" I thought we had something special. Women should introduce themselves with that information - effing outrageous leading us all on like that. e.g. Hello, my name is whatever and I am happily married woman. Today I will talk to you about Irish language, but don't get any ideas, as I said, I'm happily married. That would be an appropriate intro. Instead of pretending to be single for the first 9 minutes and twenty seconds. Madness.

My grandfather used to say _omagon_ for "fool" which I am pretty sure was an alternate pronunciation of _amadan._ He learned it from his own father who was of Irish extraction from Newfoundland; so I have assumed that's where it came from, but I have never found any record of it in Newfoundland Irish.

Congrats on the pregnancy! I have a question for you if you don't mind. I'm half Irish through my dad (his mom was from Co. Galway and his dad from Swords, Co. Dublin) but I have never learned any Irish, and nor has he. I really want to get to a good level so I can speak to my nan in Irish rather than English, but I don't know any quick, easy ways of doing so. Any tips? I watched your videos on common words which were helpful but I wanted to go a bit more advanced. I can definitely say I grew up with a lot of Irish customs though! Saying no a million times before you say yes, saying so many byes you just have to walk out eventually, and more.

I went to a village in Wales last week that is famous for its multi-coloured houses, you can see them in Bristol (in SW England) as well, but did you know this tradition is actually Irish? When their queen Victoria passed away, it was decreed that people in Ireland (this was pre-Easter 1916) painted their houses black as a mark of respect to the late foreign unelected monarch. The Irish as are famous for doing so rebelled, said 'b@lls' and painted their houses blue yellow white green and whatever colour they couldn't find that wasn't black!

Im the 137th great grandson of Ríoghnach, or atleast her husband, Níal. We share the same haplogroup. He was the first High King of Northern Ireland. I repeat, from the NORTH. Its probably why i have some red patches in my otherwise dark beard. Im a Czech German French Irish American Indian with Apache red black beard. Im Métis, je suis un pirate, c'est vrai. Un pirate du cúl. Im just kidding. Im more of a bottom anyways.

Your videos are really well explained, and I love the little bit of history behind the names. With the Labhraidh, I thought bh was pronounced as v, but it's a w. Does it depend on what letters are before or after it? Maybe you could do a video about the Irish alphabet and the different sounds letters make together x

I did better than I thought I would! I got about half of them straightaway, and about a fourth pretty close to correct. A few just left me 😵‍💫. Both my husband and I are of Irish descent. I was raised in the Irish Step Dance community, going to feisanna and ceilis. When we were having our babies, Irish or "Irish inspired" names were our go to choices. I campaigned hard for Maeve because I loved the idea of naming a daughter after such a strong woman, but my hubs wasn't a fan. He really liked Deirdre, but I didn't like the idea of naming our daughter after someone with such a horrible story (including her taking her own life). In the end we have a Mary (was this close to Maire!), a Fiona, and a Brigid. If they'd been boys they were to be Conor, Owen, or Declan.

I'm from New Orleans, and we use something similar to "yer man/one" which is "ya boy/girl". Usually means someone the other person knows, but could mean literally anyone, even yourself. "I ran into ya boy the other day." There was a popular radio DJ whose call-phrase was "It's ya boy, Wild Wayne!" and if you want someone to call you, you could say "Holla at ya boy." If you don't know them, you could replace "ya" with " ol' ", as in "ol' boy/girl/dude". "Check out ol' girl on the corner." You could use either whether you know them or not, though.
